All visually impaired children, regardless of the nature and degree of impairment deserves to be educated. Unfortunately, there aren’t any service here in Singapore catering to the educational needs of such children. Hence, many are not receiving specialist education services to help them succeed.
I want to be a special education teacher for children with vision impairment. Presently there is very little specialised support for such children here. Everything is done ad hoc, and there isn’t anyone with the professional qualifications to do the job well. I am taking a Master course to prepare myself for this role. I should (pray hard) complete it next year June! Wish me luck!
Through the readings in my coursework I will put up some articles here, in the hope that this site can provide some information to parents and educators on the needs of children with visual impairment, and how these needs can be met.
I have also include my own personal experience as a parent of a child with visual impairment, to show the other side of the story. Parents may be able to relate to our own experiences, and teachers will understand that behind that disability, there is a child like any other child, but struggling to cope.
Please leave comments, your opinions, or if there are any other articles you would like to see here, anything that can help improve what is currently available!
Thank you, and happy reading.
Good luck with your studies. And please keep up this blog. I’m very interested in hearing more. I too am going to school to study Orientation and Mobility, and my daughter is visually impaired. I am also a publisher and I’ve published a book written by and Orientation and Mobility instructor which I would love to send you a copy of. If you email me with your address, I can send it to you.
