Including Students with Visual Impairments (Pt. 3)

 

Teaching strategies:

·             Provide adequate work space – brailler, books, etc

·             Provide storage space for books and other equipment

·             Have all materials transcribed into Braille ahead of each lesson/class – books, worksheets, etc

·             Adapt or modify instructional materials, strategies, etc. as necessary

·             Allow the student to explore tactually any equipment or specimen brought into the classroom. Ensure student’s safety where necessary, when handling them.

·             Do not assume student has understood correctly the concept(s) taught. Check with the student to confirm.

·             Provide verbal cues to what is happening in the class, or around the student.

·             Verbalise what is written on the board so that the student can follow the lesson

·             Arrange for someone to be seated next to the student during movies, assemblies or special events to explain what is happening.

·             Develop an emergency evacuation plan, assigning a student (and an alternate) to assist the student with severe vision impairment.

·             Have same expectations for the student as his sighted classmates. Follow the same rules of behaviour and produce the same quality of work.

·             Provide opportunities for the student to help others, and assign roles of responsibilities and leadership where possible.
